It’s like the ultimate Black sitcom fantasy. Theo Huxtable grows up and marries our girl crush Tracee Ellis Ross. Yet “Reed Between the Lines” is the real thing as Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Ross team up to play the Reeds, Alex, an English professor and his wife Carla, a psychologist, walking the tight rope together of family, careers and everything in between.
After the wishes of millions for another sitcom centering on a happy Black family, BET brought the show to life. Warner reminded attendees at a screening in New York that the only way the show will last is if people tune in. “Just like the election, it takes each of you to support the show.”
Along with the Reeds and their three children, the cast also includes sitcom veteran Anna Maria Horsford and actress Melissa DeSousa. Horsford has continued to evolve since her days as Thelma on “Amen” and celebrates more than 30 years on television. “I may not have been able to keep a man that long, but I have stayed working,” she shared with a laugh.
She got more serious in discussing how the show sheds light on therapy and the need for it, especially in African-American communities. The show’s premiere features Robin Givens visiting the psychologist for a personal issue.
